Subject Matter - Own Photographs

As part of the subject matter I have used a variety of different photographs which I have taken. The photographs shown concentrate on capturing different bands and artists as this will help me produce a variety of different drawings for drawings of subject matter. I think that the photographs I have captured are extremely useful and as these are a good quality these allow me to use these as a reference when drawing for this unit, I could also consider experimenting with these.

Conventions of Form

Lyrics

As part of research I analysed a variety of the songs which are included on the album I am recreating.  The lyrics allowed me to gain inspiration for the final piece, especially the lyrics "shatter the lamp". The lyrics allowed me to visualise the different scenes within the lyrics such as imagining Pete breaking into Carl's flat.

Doherty Research

In order to get a better understanding of the band, The Libertines, I decided to research the band by reading articles. The articles shown focuses on the band member, Pete Doherty as he is the iconic feature within the band due to his addiction to drugs and rebellious behaviour. I already had a previous knowledge of Pete Doherty due to being a fan of The Libertines. However reading a variety of different articles this widened my knowledge. This researched helped as this allowed me to think of the different possibilities which could contribute to the album, e.g. showing Doherty taking drugs, showing the separation between Carl and Pete.

Scamps of others

In order to get a better understanding of the layout and design of a digipak I have produced several scamps of different digipaks from a variety of different bands. The genre for these tend to be relatively similar, alternative rock, indie and folk however these all vary due to different designs and the content of the digipak, including the meaning behind the albums. Therefore producing these scamps has allowed me to explore the range of different content which can be seen within the music industry and allows me to relate to these designs when thinking of my own creation.

Similar Artefacts

As part of research, I researched and analysed a variety of different album covers. This would allow me to view a variety of different designs and allow me to view the common features within album design and how these contribute to the design such as the layout, title, colour scheme and photographs/illustrations.

Brainstorm

To begin this unit I produced several different mind maps due to the theme being, Flaws, Perfection, Compromises and Ideals. Once I had created several mind maps identifying the different aspects within this theme I began to mind map different artists which have been impacted causing inconveniences within the band or within the artist. This involved thinking of artists who have been impacted by drugs and addiction, examples of these are Syd Barrett, Kurt Cobain and Jeff Buckley. I have also included artists who have a flaw within themselves, an example of this would be James Morrison who has a flaw within his voice, hence why his voice has a distinct sound, another would be Seasick Steve who has been homeless throughout his career. I decided to focus on album design hence the reason why I researched artists. This fits in with the theme as drug abuse, addictions are all compromises as this compromises a band/artists. As well as this some singers may have flaws within themselves, as previously mentioned James Morrison.

Brief

I have been commissioned to produce a design for the album The Libertines, by The Libertines. The purpose of this project is to create a more modern and creative design compared to the current design of the album. In order to create a new design for this album I will research similar artefacts such as the design of a variety of different albums by different designers. As well as this I will also research the band thoroughly in order to gain background knowledge, I currently have a knowledge of Pete Doherty's past, however I will research this in more depth. The background knowledge gained will be the main ammunition for this project as this will allow me to produce numerous designs which relate to the band, e.g. taking into account Doherty's drug addiction, therefore the album could feature illustrations of drugs. 

The target audience is mainly aimed at adults and young adults, however the content which contributes to the design for this album will be thought through thoroughly to ensure that this is suitable for a young audience.
